The Legal Professional is an independent publication devoted to law, language and professional communication across legal systems.

It publishes carefully researched commentary, essays and professional perspectives on the interpretation, translation and communication of legal concepts. Particular attention is given to the points at which language, legal culture and professional practice intersect—and where apparently familiar terminology can conceal important differences between jurisdictions.

The publication is intended for lawyers, judges, academics, in-house counsel, legal translators, language professionals and others working across legal and linguistic boundaries. Its purpose is not merely to explain terminology, but to encourage careful analysis, informed discussion and a more precise understanding of how law is communicated.

The Legal Professional was founded and is edited by Alexandra Mareschi, a lawyer and Legal English specialist with more than twenty years of experience in legal and professional language training. She is also the founder of Legal English Online Consultancy.

Although associated with Legal English Online Consultancy, The Legal Professional maintains its editorial independence. Contributions, professional collaborations and sponsorship proposals are considered only where they are consistent with the publication’s editorial standards and do not compromise its autonomy.

The People Behind the Publication

The Legal Professional draws on the experience of its editor and contributors from law, language and professional practice. Each contribution is intended to share informed perspectives, encourage critical thought and make complex questions of legal communication more accessible.

The publication approaches professional development as more than the acquisition of terminology. Clear legal communication also requires analytical judgment, linguistic precision and an understanding of how legal concepts operate within different systems and cultures.

EDITOR IN CHIEF

Alexandra Mareschi is an Italian-German lawyer-linguist who grew up in Cologne, London and Valencia. Working across five languages, she combines a civil-law background with an understanding of English legal language and the linguistic differences between legal systems.

She studied law at the University of Cologne and holds an LL.M. in International Business Law and Dispute Resolution from Queen Mary University of London. She also completed postgraduate studies in terminology at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. Her further qualifications include training in language teaching, business communication, intercultural awareness and mediation.

With more than twenty years of experience in Legal English and professional communication, Alexandra works with lawyers, judges, in-house counsel and other professionals who need to explain legal concepts accurately across languages and jurisdictions. Her particular interests include employment law, contracts, compliance, regulatory communication and comparative legal terminology.

Alexandra founded Legal English Online Consultancy in 2010 and is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Legal Professional. Her writing examines the relationship between law, language and legal culture, with particular attention to the misunderstandings that arise when terminology and legal concepts move between jurisdictions.

Her work is guided by a simple principle: effective legal communication requires more than correct English. It requires an understanding of the law behind the language, the legal system in which a concept operates and the professional context in which it must be communicated.
